John obtained his BA and MA in Economics, his PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge and he is now Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Lancaster University. Other appointments that he is currently undertaking are as RSA Fellow; Founding Academician, UK Academy of Social Sciences; chair, Sociology Research Assessment Panel (1996, 2001); Honorary Doctorate, Roskilde; editor of International Library of Sociology (Routledge); co-editor of Mobilities and member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of UNESCO’s 2013 World Social Science Report. He is also the current Director of the Lancaster Centre for Mobilities Research. His publication list includes over 40 books and special issues, the most recent being Automobilities (2005), Mobilities, Networks, Geographies (2006), Mobilities (2007), Aeromobilities (2009), After the Car (2009), Mobile Lives (2010), Mobile Methods (2010), The Tourist Gaze 3.0 (2011), Climate Change and Society (2011) and Societies beyond Oil (2013).
