Steve Miles

“Experimential consumption and the commodification of place”

Steve joined the Department of Sociology of Manchester Metropolitan University in early 2013 after having been a Professor in Urban Culture at the University of Brighton. Prior to that he lectured at the University of Liverpool where he was part of the management group of Impacts 08, researching the social, cultural and economic impacts of the city’s European Capital of Culture experience. Steve previously worked at Northumbria University where he was Head of Research for the Centre for Cultural Policy and Management and where he conducted a large-scale research project into the impact of cultural investment on Newcastle Gateshead Quayside.

Steve’s research interests concern the sociology of consumption and cultural policy and regeneration. His key publications include Consumerism as aWay of Life (Sage, 1998) and Youth Lifestyles in a Changing World (OUP, 2000) and he is co-author of Consuming Cities (Palgrave Macmillan, 2004) with Malcolm Miles. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Consumer Culture.
